Lamkin’s Five Golden Rules for Social Media

  1. Know your audience - Why are your followers following? What do they want to see? It’s fair to assume that golf will be an interest but is that Tour news, club results, social calendar or the latest gear? Try a few out and see what your audience interacts with. Even better, ask them!
  2. Don’t oversell – Social media isn’t the place to sell, it’s where you can start conversations that lead to selling opportunities. Start conversations, ask questions and once in a while you can drop in an offer in the shop or promote an event where you will get members face to face.
  3. 50/30/20 – You don’t have to do all the work, follow the 50/30/20 rule. 50% of content should be from other sources that your audience will find interesting. 30% should be content that you generate yourself including club news and events. 20% should show your personality. It could be funny or cute or something that’s close to your heart. Make sure it’s appropriate but show a bit of yourself and your audience will appreciate it.
  4. Don’t do all the Talking – Social media is only valuable to you when it’s a two way process. Following 50/30/20 you’re sharing information for others to comment on. You take in that information and offer more contributions out. Listen to what your audience wants and use your expertise, particularly around game improvement, to keep the conversations going.
  5. Use images and videos whenever you can - Visual content is perfect for social media, it tells a story and catches the eye. If you’ve got sharable content or graphics such as in this marketing pack get posting. Even better, get out your smart phone and deliver your message straight to camera!
